John and Karyn moved back to Kingaroy and the family property ‘Bethany’ in the early 1990’s. Sir Joh and Lady Flo had run the property before then. At the time the property ran cattle, an avocado orchard and harvested various crops. With the interest in Joh and Flo’s lives, the family began running bus tours with John sharing the family stories from the early farming days and politics and Karyn helping Flo in the kitchen with the famous pumpkin scones.
Many tourists exclaimed at the beauty from the top of the hill and the expansive views. That started John thinking about how to diversify the farm by adding self-contained cottages. Starting with two cottages in 2003 and adding a further two a few years later, the family have shared their beautiful property with many guests from all over the world.
John and Karyn continue to not only run ‘Bethany’ as an operating cattle property but are determined to leave a legacy for their children by improving the property and ensuring it stays in the family hands for future generations and continuing to share their passion for the beautiful South Burnett with as many people as possible.
